Our Accelerated Mountaineer Program for ESL program offers two paths: a two-semester path and a one-semester path. Your path is based on your language test scores. No matter which path you take, you will improve your English skills and earn credit toward an undergraduate degree at WVU. After successful completion of the AMP ESL program, students begin taking all major courses.

AMP ESL-2: Two-Semester Path

In the two-semester path, students take a total of five ESL courses and five General Education Foundation courses. The GEF course selections are customizable based on your major.

First Semester

  • Three ESL courses:
    • ESL 170 - (Academic Language Skills and Cultural Studies)
    • ESL 180 - (West Virginia Culture and History)
    • ESL 260 - (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
  • Two GEF courses:
    • Most majors will take a mathematics class, based on math placement scores: MATH 126 (College Algebra), MATH 128 - (Plane Trigonometry), MATH 155 (Calculus 1), MATH 153 (Calculus 1a with Pre-calculus)
    • ENGL 101 - (Introduction to Composition and Rhetoric)

Second Semester

  • Two ESL courses:
    • ESL 270 - (Introduction to Environmental Sciences)
    • ESL 280 - (Academic Writing)
  • Three GEF courses:
    • WVUe 191 - (First-year Seminar)
    • ENGL 102 - (Composition Rhetoric and Research)
    • A course tailored to your major or a mathematics course:
      • BCOR 199 (Introduction to Business)
      • BIOL 115 & BIOL 116 (Principles of Biology)
      • CHEM 111 (Survey of Chemistry)
      • COMM 112 (Small Group Communication), COMM 105 (Introduction to Mass Media), COMM 102 (Interpersonal Communications)
      • CS 101 (Introduction to Computer Science)
      • GEOG 102 (World Religions)
      • MATH 126 (College Algebra), MATH 128 (Plane Trigonometry), MATH 155 (Calculus 1), MATH 153 (Calculus 1a with Pre-calculus)

AMP ESL-1: One-Semester Path

In the one-semester path, students take two ESL courses and three General Education Foundation (GEF) courses.  

  • ESL courses:
    • ESL 270 - Introduction to Environmental Sciences or another class in the area of science, technology, engineering and mathematics
    • ESL 280 - Academic Writing
  • GEF courses:
    • WVUe 191 - (First-year Seminar)
    • ENGL 101- Freshman English + support, or ENGL 102 - (Composition Rhetoric and Research) + support
    • A course tailored to your major
      • BCOR 199 (Introduction to Business)
      • BIOL 115 & BIOL 116 (Principles of Biology)
      • CHEM 111 (Survey of Chemistry)
      • COMM 112 (Small Group Communication), COMM 105 (Introduction to Mass Media), COMM 102 (Interpersonal Communications)
